After
graduating from North Carolina State’s School of Design, Nancy
worked as a graphic designer for more than twenty five years, the
last 17 as owner of Hughes
Design in Raleigh. Prior she worked for other companies, including
six years out of state in Michigan and in Boston. Now in a second
career as a painter, Nancy's artistic endeavors spring from her multi-faceted
design education, self-instruction, artist workshops and a lifetime
of creative explorations.
The coastal and rural landscapes of her native southeastern North
Carolina inspire many of her paintings. Her subjects are both new
and familiar places — the beach and ocean, marshlands, open fields,
lakes, greenways plus vistas from her travels. Nancy
paints in oils usually from her own reference photographs. Her paintings
strive to be simple, serene and soothing, not too complicated. Learning,
evolving, experimenting, expressing — to Nancy, that's what it
means to be an artist.
